Why Is My Faucet Dripping?

A leaky faucet can end up costing you more than just a little piece of your sanity. Estimates by the Environmental Protection Agency show that most household leaks end up wasting 10,000 gallons of water per home. That is enough to fill up a swimming pool! If you are already very aware of your utility bills, this little fact will have you rushing to the phone to get someone to take care of your leak. Before you give us a call, however, let's take a glance at what can cause your faucet to drip.

A dripping faucet can be the product of a slew of different issues. One of the most common, and easily repaired, issues involves a leaky O-Ring. An O-Ring is a type of rubber seal that keeps the handles of your faucet water tight. Over time, because of usage and decay, this ring will loose its seal. Once the seal is gone you will begin to see water appearing from the handles. But what if your sink is dripping from the spout?

One of the most common causes of spout leaking involves the washer that keeps the valve seat in place. Every time you use your handle, this washer is forced to do a ton of work. Over time, due to hard water, sediment, and repetitious usage, this washer will begin to depreciate. Once the washer has sufficiently worn down you will begin to see a leak around the spout of the faucet. This is increasingly common in cartridge faucets. To repair this issue you will need to find out what model of washer, or the size specifically, you are using. Find a corresponding washer and install it to simply eradicate the issue.

Those are the most common issues and they tend to be an easy fix. There are times, however, when your problem is not so easily remedied. Busted plumbing can be the originator of a voracious leak and will require a professional no hand to help assess the issue. Plumbing can bust for a variety of different reasons including weather, water quality, and usage.
